If you haven’t heard the buzz yet, punk legend Brendan Kelly is coming to Springfield MO’s newest live music venue, The Cellar, on August 8, 2021! Brendan is the bassist and vocalist of the Chicago-based, The Lawrence Arms. Brendan is also the guitarist and vocalist of renown punk bands including: The Falcon, Slapstick, and The Broadways.
He has been voted “Best Twitter” by Chicago Reader and was a TV Host. In 2015, Kelly started a Twitter account, Nihilist Arby’s, which garnered a huge following with its “absurdist, death-and-doom tweeting” about Arby’s and life in general. Kelly also appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart in a correspondent piece by Ed Helms entitled “The Clash” in 2004.
Now after a couple years crafting deviant songs, he has gone solo. He released his “solo” material under the name Brendan Kelly and the Wandering Birds. He is not some emo boy with a guitar or another “punk goes acoustic” outing, this is an artist collective like Wu-Tang Clan or Crass. It involves musicians, visual artists, studio nerds, and even a college film professor. We’re not sure how to describe this wild record (Space Rock? Chiptune?), but we know it’s a likable mix and a real departure from what you’re used to hearing from Brendan and this scene. And he’s bringing the whole vibe to The Cellar.
From Brendan: “Summer shows! I promised a ‘Here Goes Nothing Tour’, and well, here goes nothing. Some of these shows are gonna be at backyard BBQs, parking lots, pool parties, and even at Four Seasons Total Landscaping (for real). This is all new territory for everyone, so please be safe/cool about it and let’s have some fun together.”
We are stoked to have Brendan at The Cellar and can’t wait to experience his infamous witticisms in real life!
