The Ozark Mountain Daredevils on Record is the culmination of seven years’ effort on the part of Michael Kuelker, a St. Louis-based teacher and writer, to tell the Daredevils’ story through oral history and documentation about the band’s official and unofficial recordings. The 532-page book draws on more than 50 hours of interviews that Kuelker conducted from 2014-2021 with the six founding members of the band and many others, and it features dozens of previously unpublished photos, many in color.
Fat and Funny is a warm, witty chronicle of Supe Granda’s side job as Santa Claus, written as a “how to” by someone who has brought Yuletide mirth myriad times to children’s parties, office parties, the Country Music Hall of Fame and beyond. Chapters bearing titles such as “Older Gals Like Santa Too,” “Santa Goes to Christian College” and “Not Every Moment is Golden” do not disappoint. Granda has also penned the memoir It Shined: The Saga of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils (2008). He has been the Daredevils’ bassist since their founding in late 1971.
Justin Larkin, a singer-songwriter and producer based in Springfield, will provide live music. He has released two new albums in 2022: Studio Live EP, a solo set recorded at KSMU, and the full-length Nowhere is a Place, which has contributions by the Hillbenders and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. Larkin also plays in the Springfield rock band Mood Ring Circus.
The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, currently celebrating their 50th anniversary as a band, have been prepping for two very special concerts to take place on Sept. 10 and 11 with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra at the Juanita K. Hammons Performing Arts Center. These are the first-ever shows pairing the Daredevils with an orchestra. Bandmember Bill Jones (saxophones, flute) has composed the charts for the symph0ny players; suffice to say that these will be fascinating, unprecedented arrangements of Daredevil songs. The OMD were recently the subject of the documentary film Ozark Mountain Daredevils: Backstage produced by Ozarks Public Television.
